Behind Closed Doors

It’s all about textures!

By Lena Corwin. Throws are a simple and effective way of adding vibrance into a living room, as well as adding the “cosy” dimension

By Lena Corwin. The modernist bed lamp mixed with the wooden bed head and tonal bed covers creates a clean feel to the bedroom. With natural light pouring into the room, it will help the room feel fresh!

By Lena Corwin. Natural wood, painted wood, floorboards mixed with the colourful plastic chairs (that I have sourced from Matt Blatt) also creates a modern tone. Adding different elements of textures and patterns will set a personal dimension to your room.

Lena Corwin. From a far, the natural light fills the room which does not become too overbearing due to the natural tones in the wood.

By Lena Corwin. The white tones in the room help add the feeling of overwhelming light to a room, paired with a light toned wood frame and organic elements in a room.

By Lena Corwin. Mixing colours, textures and patterns can be fun and add vibrance especially to a kids bedroom! The light that fills the room, combined with the floorboards help open up the room to make it feel less crowded, leaving more play with patterns and textures…

By Lena Corwin. Keeping all tones neutral with beiges add an organic mood to a room plus the element of cosiness. Raspberry red tones also create this mood…

By Lena Corwin. Why not add a bit of personality through ornaments and vases?

By Lena Corwin. Mixing tonal patterns always adds another element of festivities and formalities to the table… literally.

Lena Corwin. This may sound a little silly, but I’ve always found organic cups very chic… Complete your dinner set with an assortment of organic plates, bowls and platters.. But then again the odd one here and there is always appealing too.

By The Selby. Jars are a great way to create a sense of order in your cupboard or even out on display to show off your passion for cooking and baking!

By The Selby. The differing textures in this photo all come together… The leather, wood and glass all with neutral tones make the room so much more appealing and interesting… Mirrors are a great way to make a room feel bigger, so place them to reflect a window that is filled with natural light or scenery.

The Selby. There’s something soothing about the combination of food, beautiful flowers and wine…

Interiors to entice

Sunshine and a neutral colour palette is always a winner in any part of your home but, in particular a kitchen where we all spend so much time together…or simply all alone preparing something delicious for you family and friends…..a good kitchen in neutral colours, great bench space and here I must say I love the glass fronted cupboards…its like bookshelves in a sitting room it ads a warmth and interest to a space that can often be cold.
Wondering what to do with all those really pretty jam and chutney jars you have in the cupboard…I know the plan is to make your own jams, relishes and chutneys, but until you get around to this what about picking assorted flowers or herbs and having a pretty collection to bring pleasure to all who see. I also love to see multiples of the same flowers….if you are passing our office in Lindfield (next to ciao down) you will often see that I have a collection of beautiful things in our office to be enjoyed by those on the inside and those passing…. it’s our home away from home and loving interiors the way I do I like to be surrounded by things that please the eye…… helps our environment be a warm, and friendly space to do great things on all things to do with property.
A variation on the same theme…. you know it is not about going to a florist and buying a large bunch of flowers….. a touch here and there adds interest, warmth and a great eye for design on making a space appeal, easy to do and not the least bit expensive….. a reflection of thought
Ok I know… but things in threes…..simple yes?
Creating a mood, showing your gorgeous collectables, your love of cooking, your personality so to speak…wouldn’t it be terrible if we all embraced beige
A cutlery drawer to die for
A colour to embrace “turquoise” I love it! Perfect colour to use as a punctuation throughout the home especially in the warmer months
Great colour…..what flavour?
A statement outdoors this would look so fabulous poolside on a wall…certainly not beige
A more discreet way to introduce this great colour
May not be turquoise but certainly a touch of summer…shells place together as a story in the home look just beautiful
An eclectic mix of retro creates a strong personality in the room grouped together to make the statement stronger
Tres provincial and so gorgeous who doesn’t want to walk through that door….whatever your front door looks like I always think its a great idea to make it one that begs you to come inside and see the beautiful space behind.
A great workspace… if you are someone who works from home, whether it is a school project you are working on. or emailing friends/clients, organising a get together, planning your next holiday or that everyday day chore none of us can escape in paying your bills, how easy is it to create something like this to make it all the more pleasuarable. Time and imagination is all that is stopping all of us from making a space like this to sit at and work: be it a small desk in a corner of the room or a designated study make it truly unique to reflect your dreams and passions in life….. cosy haven to retreat for whatever the reason.
A perfect place for us to escape
This space whilst seems minimalist on a closer look shows so many treasures…the “come closer and see” artistic display behind the desk, headphones, stacked storage unit a dock and a laptop…what else do you need….fabulous
Happy Melbourne Cup
Now this is a drink for a celebration…..good luck!

Styling ideas for your home

What a gorgeous kitchen this would be to cook in!

Imagine Christmas morning surrounded by your team.

A great colour palette with lots of windows to give light and beautiful vistas. Lots of bench space piled with delicious food

Cooking here would be too easy …. look at all the hanging pots open shelving and I love the island bench…is that on casters?

A great urban kitchen and chic with a real twist of an artisitic eye creates interest for those looking for a simple yet sophisticated look.
Details such as the little bird, stacking boxes and a collection of eclectic goodies makes one feel they have entered a space with intimacy and adds appeal for those looking for a home which offer a personalilty and a unique flavour.

Team’s of 3… per say

Want to make your home decor a little more sophisticated?

Try arranging some of your bits and pieces around the house into groups of three. It’s a kind of design rule of thumb that odd numbers balance better, moreso than even numbers to offset the symmetry. Unless you’re obviously trying to create a symmetrical appeal in your house, it’s better to use odd numbers.

Start with using 3 objects to group together and if desired, add from there.

For example, it’s rarely seen that in a vase of flowers you see 2 lonesome stems! Usually they’re arranged with 5 stems in a vase.

Somehow putting two ornaments around the house looks like it isn’t complete and is always impossible to try and find the perfect place to sit!

And just quietly… My team at Richarson & Wrench are a dynamic team of 3!

Below are some quirky examples of balanced home decor,  sourced from The Selby.

Enjoy!

Snippets of a winter wonderland

Some images and snippets of a winter wonderland. Such a great traditional French restaurant in Gastown, Vancouver. Heavenly homemade french bread cannot be beaten!

The packaging on water bottles are getting more and more sophisticated.. Just love a good bottle! Is that weird?

Traditional French Onion Soup… So divine and rich!

Duck… can never say no if it’s on the menu!

Caramelized Oranges and Mint, Orange Blossom Sorbet.

Not too heavy but so flavoursome!

Creme Brulee! Ready to devour this special treat - good toffee and great texture… but the last spoonful is always the hardest.

The mini taxi to Granville Island on a clear, yet freezing Vancouver’s day.

Tubs of fresh raspberries in the markets of Granville Island. Amazing fresh produce that is offered, as well as soup kitchens, mushroom stalls, danishes, gelatos, homemade chocolates and the good old traditional hot dog and pies.

Cinamon scrolls in the making, using an old fashioned scale to measure the size of each scroll.

Gastown’s clock.. Similar to Sydney’s Rocks – great restaurants and tourist shops available

An enlarged image of the historic background of Gastown

Great hat shop in Yaletown Vancouver with any type of hat from beanies to peaked caps in every size and colour, meaning you’re bound to walk out with a purchase!

NYE in our hotel. Ready for big celebrations for 2011!

Polar Bear Swim – New Years Day Vancouver Bay competition of swimming in freezing waters (many still left over from the previous night, plus many dressed up!) to a small boat… Thousands come to spectate and is worth the walk down to the bay.

Some of the costumes participants choose to drown.. I mean swim in.

One of three Fairmont’s in Vanvouver. I just love the detailing here on the windows.. May be a little hard to read, but having sentences designed in metal as a detailing is effective in catching your attention. Love it!

The Fairmont Christmas decorations always excite us… What’s so exciting about this feature?

It’s made out of candy!!

Looks so delicious and festive!

Out hotel held a Christmas Tree decoration competition with differing interior designers. Voters give money in the boxes beside and the tree with the most money wins and donates it to their chosen charity.

This was my favourite…

Hidden behind a book shop was our favourite soup shop in Whistler. Sitting with the snow falling out the window is so relaxing and peaceful. Not to mention beautiful!

More snow catching on trees in Whistler Village!

Walking through Whistler Village. So much snow!

Top of Whistler mountain, with a stunning outlook from wherever you ski…

Silverstar accommodation – I just love cosy interiors with the dark wood. Creates such a relaxing ‘snowy’ scene.

Another stunning view from the top of Silverstar mountain.

One of the views onlooking Silverstar mountain from the living room. Living in a winter paradise!

We all tend to overlook what we ski past. Just a snapshot of some of the beautiful Canadian pines.

Sunset in Silverstar. The colours contradict the snow so beautifully!

Such a gap between Mother’s day and Christmas!

Delicious bean, tomato and prosciutto salad…who said Chistmas is naughty!

King prawn salad, bowl of raspberries and strawberries with a cocktail which featured mango, orange and pineapple juice…problem with this is it was too easy too drink.

King prawn salad with basil and thai basil with a dressing of homemade mayonnaise dressing.

Raspberries and strawberries to accompany Lizzie’s pavlova.

Geoffrey’s home grown floral arrangement.

Mongolian studded dress featured in guest bedroom.

Chic side table decor, the flowers are companion planted next to the vegetables in the portage garden

This is a work in progress, a natural amphitheatre just too beautiful for words to do it justice. The first time I visited this part of the garden none of us had any idea what was behind all the overgrown vegitation.

All the timber gathered at Tall Gums being stock piled waiting to be mulched and turned back into the gardens.

Love this tree it looks like a sculpture…look closely to the left and the table you can see is made with a naturally split tree found when clearing Tall Gums.

Looking back up to the property.

The hard work of the past 12 months are starting to really pay off.

Lots of local sandstone used throughout the garden features as sculptures.

At the bottom of the garden another part of the garden emerges and a natural rainforest starts to raise its head.

Mothers Day!

Starters… South coast oysters- Wonboyn Rock, Merimbula Lake and Pambula Oyster.
My husband Richard and I.
My girls and my mum.

I woke up to a full english breakfast from my wonderful husband and youngest daughter Millie… Then we met my eldest daughter Kate and had a gorgeous long lunch at
Boathouse at Blackwattle Bay. I hadn’t been in years and it was just as good as I remembered, the restaurant was full of families and the service was impeccable. I should have had the snapper pie, but I left that one to the girls! I had a roast hapuka fillet with a duck confit sausage and lentils… which was nowhere near as naughty as the pie! Shared a fabulous bottle of Spanish wine- Telmo Rodriguez Gabo do Xil 2007- and let Kate drive us home.

Hump Day Humour

My daughter Kate directed me to this site, “It’s Lovely! I’ll Take It!”- A collection of poorly chosen photos from real estate listings. Sara’s captions are usually as hilarious as the picture itself.
